Progress Reports
The Project moves to Gujarat in May 2010. You can track my progress on the map below which I will update regularly as I travel to specific locations and photographs at specific sites. This phase of the work in Gujarat will concentrate on shared sacred sites, including dargahs and temples that are frequented by both Hindus and Muslims. Since 2004 Gujarat has been synonymous with Hindu-Muslim violence, with the slaugther of over 2000 people in the city of Ahmedabad in 2004 prominent in people's mind.
This phase of the work is perhaps one of the most difficult for me to work on since it takes me to a state now infamous for its Hindutva leanings and strong anti-Muslim sentiments. And yet I remain convinced that Gujarat's syncretic heritage may still be alive and that it alone can offer a path back from the brink of madness that was 2004. In our modern age of cynicism, this naivete keeps me hopeful and determined to continue and explore whatever faded testaments to the shared remain in the region.
You can follow the project here, and also on my personal blog The Spinning Head where I will be posting regular updates throughout my travels.
