Someone please send these people some skateboards (see my previous post When All Else Fails, Give Them Our Games… because their women are quite clearly in desperate need of liberation from their ‘men’! These are orthodox Jewish women in Israel, in case you cannot tell. And you would not be wrong for not being able to!
Note yet again the referential tone and posture adopted towards a community that would otherwise have come under extreme derision and hostile mockery, if not for calls for invasion and ‘liberation’ had it been a Muslim community. See my earlier piece called Seeing Beauty Or Seeing Repression – Is It A Question Of Perspective? about this tendency to excuse the fundamentalism of some, and use as justification for harassment, bombardment and occupation, of others. And to say nothing about the fact that the women who are resisting these now archaic, and clearly problematic strictures on Orthodox Jewish women, are often simply ignored. One tiny example, the struggle to simply be allowed a civilised and hassle free right to travel on El-Al, which began because of the constant harassment women flyers get from Orthodox men who refuse to sit next to them.
BTW: a referential, and respectable tone to discuss the ways and values of other people are precisely the way to go. not to say that they should be above criticism. what we have here however is an overt hypocrisy that veils a set of practices of one community as ‘tradition’ and ‘historical depth’, and that of another as backwardness and barbarism.
